School holiday guide to your library

There’s a whole world of fun at your library these school holidays, and no excuses for being bored, whatever the weather. If you’re looking for something to do, make the trek to your local library and take the whole family with you!

If you’re not sure where to start when it comes to what to read, or you want to read something that other young people think is cool, visit our Book Buzz pages. If you are under 12, these pages will let you in on what other kids are saying about adventure books like The Grim Grotto by Lemony Snicket, or Aquamarine, a fantasy book about mermaids. There’s even a selection of books that are really funny.

Try our interactive reading guides

For something a bit different try some of our online quizzes – these interactive puzzles test your knowledge & challenge you to discover great reading in all kinds of areas:

The undercoversHave you met the Undercovers? They’re three groovy characters, who know their way around and can help you find stuff that’s fun to do and fun to read. You can even download a free poster to colour in.

We regularly update our listing of newest titles for children, and you can also try our If you like… section, which has some great reading suggestions based on books and authors that young people may already enjoy. If you like Kiwi authors, you can find out about them in our massive selection of interviews, or read some of their stories online.

PirateEvents aplenty me hearties…

Pirates, magicians, belly dancers and clowns will be wiggling and juggling and saying ‘aaarrrgghhh’ and ‘abracadabra’ at libraries all over town in the next two weeks – don’t miss your chance to see these spectacular shows up close. If you want to learn to be a reporter, or tell digital travelling stories there are events for you too.

TeensPulse - for teenagers

Older readers will want to visit pulse, our site for 13 to 18 year-olds. It has a special section called Good Reads, with links to reviews, authors, booklists, as well as online reviews. Young adults will also be interested in NoveList, a premium web site which is a guide to practically everything - you can even do a plot search if you can't remember the title of the book. Access this with your library card number and PIN, or at our libraries.

There’s also a What’s On guide for anyone who wants to escape the house.
