Get reel: It's film festival time

The library’s timeline shows that in 1908 Christchurch’s first movie theatre opened on what is now New Regent Street. Called the Colosseum, it was thought to be one of the largest wooden buildings in the country. It was so big, New Regent Street was created when the theatre was demolished in 1932. Today, Christchurch has at least ten cinemas, showing a wide variety of films from around the world.

Christchurch City Libraries holds at least one example of a blook, which is a book made from a blog, but there is a huge list of books that have been made into films.

And who knows - perhaps one day we’ll be able to give you our guide to flooks – films made from books made from blogs… but then, if there was a movie made from a blog, would it be a blogie, a mog, or a bloovie?

Enough – get out there and watch some films!

Nick Paris - film festival publicistRavin' with the Maven: A guide to the film festival

This week marks the beginning of the New Zealand International Film Festival. Nick Paris is archive maven at Christchurch’s most iconic, independent ‘video store’ Alice in Videoland. He is the publicist for this year's festival, and he tells us all about this year’s offerings, which range from hard-hitting to hilarious.

If that's not enough, keep an eye out for the The Jasmax film festival, celebrating architecture and built heritage, coming to Christchurch next month. Later in the year, look out for the Italian and the Korean film festivals.

Books into film

Christchurch City Libraries have a massive list of books into film, from 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern reworking of The Taming of the Shrew to Zoya. For people who like to read the book before they see the film, there’s a truckload of titles, each directly connected to both the library catalogue and the Internet Movie Database. We also have a Read the Book section for children.
