After months of effort, building noise and shifting things around, the makeover of Spreydon Library is complete.
In her first year with the organisation, community librarian Fiona Macdonald has had her plate full with a major refurbishment. It's been well worth the effort, she says. “The result for the customers I think is an inviting, comfortable library which is light and airy. It’s a library where they can sit and linger … we’re delighted.”
Te Kete Wānanga o Ōpāwaho - Spreydon Library
The area surrounding the Heathcote River - Ōpāwaho - was a plentiful mahinga kia, or food gathering place, especially for tuere (blind eel) and kanakana (lamprey). Once marshy and covered in grasses, raupo and tussock, the swamps draining the Opawaho were called Te Kuru and the upper reaches of the river at Spreydon bore the name Wai Mokihi after a smaller pā located there called O Mokihi meaning place of the flax staff rafts.
