Summer – time to plan your year
The year is in full swing and there’ll be plenty of fantastic reading and entertainment options available at your library this year.
All the usual events are back in the calendar for this year – New Zealand Music Month in May, Matariki and the library book sale in June and New Zealand Book Month and Library Week later in the year. Keep an eye on our events listings.
Low-cost holiday programmes are also available at libraries and learning centres.
And on the subject of planning – why not try to visit all of the libraries in our network this year? Christchurch has brilliant libraries with helpful staff and a half-day or day trip is a wonderful way to spend time and relax in a no-stress, comfortable environment. Most items are free to borrow. Bus routes service most libraries, and we’ve also compiled a chart of distances between libraries for those cycling or taking the family car.
Prizes for the children
Until February 3 the Summertime Reading Club is giving children aged up to 12 the chance to win some great prizes. All the young ones have to do is read six books and return an easy form.
Win cellphones with pulse
Young people aged 13 to 18 can also win some fantastic prizes in the pulse digital photo competition. There’s two vodafone cellphones with $500 credit and three Telecom cellphones with $50 credit up for grabs – plus airtime vouchers as consolation prizes.
Just send us a photo of your favourite place – where you went on holiday, a park, a beach – and go in the draw to win. It’s that easy!
Visit the pulse flickr to get ideas.

Resource of the week:
Google is the first stop on the internet for many, however there is information the google robots can’t find – but you can – at your library! Christchurch City Libraries subscribes to a huge range of pay-for websites and databases. Because we've paid the subscription fees, you can access them FREE with your library card and PIN.
A few can only be accessed from within our libraries.
With technology in mind, this week check out Safari books online, an entire information technology library. From artificial intelligence and mark-up languages, to desktop publishing and networking, Safari contains e-books from publishers such as O'Reilly, New Riders, Peachpit Press and Adobe Press. It's a mine of information for intermediate and advanced users.

Discover Canterbury with localeye
localeye is a directory of Canterbury businesses and organisations that have websites. The information is grouped into categories to help you get things done, find out about city life, out of town or work and play, as well as facts and figures and information about business and finance and the environment. If you’re new to the region there’s visitor information and a what’s on guide.
CINCH - helping you find courses, clubs and organisations
If you are planning to take a course this year visit CINCH, our community information directory. Christchurch City Libraries has been listing information on community groups and organisations for over twenty years. If you’re looking for a course or a class to take to help you learn a new skill, enhance your creativity or try something completely different, CINCH is the place to start. If you are part of a club or not-for-profit organisation you can list your groups details for free.
