These images of early Christchurch and Canterbury have been digitised from the collections of Christchurch City Libraries. They have been sourced from newspapers, archives, books, reports and donations from private collections.

  • Samples of a selection of just some of our images have been arranged under broad topics to show the scope of the collection. Click on one of these topics to view.
  • You can browse all the digitised images by scrolling through the various collections which are listed below.
  • To locate a specific photograph from our full collection use the library catalogue. Type in a keyword and then limit the search by material type to "pictures & photographs" by scrolling down under "all materials" until you reach "pictures & photographs".
