The Canterbury Association vessel Steadfast was a full-rigged ship of 524 tons, built in 1847. It sailed from Gravesend 27 Feb. 1851 and arrived in Lyttelton 8 June 1851, a voyage of 101 days. Thomas Spencer was the Commander and Dr John Seager Gundry (1807-1886), the Surgeon-Superintendent. Dr Gundry established a medical practice on the south side of Cashel Street about halfway between Colombo Street and Oxford Terrace but moved back to England in 1858 where he became the vicar of Honiton, Devon.
