In the 1930s Ern (Ernest Lawrence) Smith (1887-1952) operated his business from 9 George Street (later Oram Avenue) and he is pictured sitting in one of his trucks. He was also a coal merchant, operated a petrol station selling Plume brand petrol, and was the last mayor of New Brighton, 1935-1941. His house, now demolished, is shown on the right
