  • In 1947 went to London to study and sing, where he became one of the leading singers (bass baritone) at the Royal Opera House.
  • Married Beryl McMillan, also a singer and actor, in 1959.
  • Also performed in light opera, musicals and concerts, as well as acting in film.
  • Was the first Māori opera singer to earn an international reputation.
  • Also talented as a Māori carver.

  • Daughter Rima Te Wiata is also an actress and singer.
