Halloween
- Halloween is celebrated on 31 October.
- The name is a abbreviated version of "All Hallows' Even", the evening before All Hallows' Day (All Saints' Day) on 1 November. "Hallow" is an Old English word for "holy person".
- Halloween has Celtic as well as Christian origins. Many traditions of Halloween date back to Samhain, the ancient Celtic New Year.
- Halloween is a time when people enjoy the thrill of being scared by witches, ghosts, goblins, and things that go bump in the night.
- In the United States, a traditional Halloween activity is Trick-or-treating. Children get dressed up in costumes and go from house to house, asking for treats such as sweets with the question, "Trick or treat?" Trick-or-treating is becoming more common in New Zealand.
