Pikihuia Awards for Māori writers

In 2007 the E tuhi! Get writing! Awards for Māori Writers were renamed to the Pikihuia Awards. These awards were established by Huia Publishers as the Huia Short Story Awards in 1995 to identify and foster Māori writing talent in both the English and Māori languages.

Highly Commended: Mahinaarangi Ann Leong for Remote, New Plymouth (Te Whakatōhea, Te Whānau-a-Apanui)

Winner: Royna Ngahuia Fifield for Secrets of the Heart, Palmerston North (Maniapoto, Tūwharetoa)
Highly Commended: Melanie Drewery for Rust, Nelson (Ngāti Mahanga)
Highly Commended: Sandra Potaka for Pavement Lunch, Hastings (Te Arawa)

Te Puni Kōkiri Award for best novel extract in English
Winner: Anahera Gildea for Morehu, Wellington (Ngāti Raukawa ki te Tonga)
Highly Commended: Tina Nixon for Ani May, Wellington (Ngāi Tahu)
Highly Commended: Paul Gilbert for Rise and Shine, Hamilton (Ngāi Tahu)

Special Award
Oho and Wiremu Kaa for their work in Māori language publishing including their contribution to Tirohia Kimihia, the first Māori monolingual dictionary which was a finalist in the Montana Book Awards 2007.
