The Ashes

For cricket lovers, one of the greatest events on the calendar has arrived. The Ashes is a Test cricket series, played between England and Australia cricket’s oldest and most celebrated rivalry dating back to 1882. It is currently played approximately biennially, alternately in England and Australia.

The 2006-2007 tournament is held in Australia and comprises of five test matches in Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth, Melbourne and Sydney. Following a lengthy period of Australian dominance, England won the trophy last year on home turf. The team has travelled to Australia this year to defend its trophy although Australia are largely seen as the favourite in this series.

The Ashes gets its name from a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times in 1882 following the match at The Oval, in which Australia beat England in England for the first time. The obituary stated that English cricket had died and that the body would be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. The English media dubbed the next English tour, to Australia in1882-83, the quest to regain The Ashes.

During the 1882-83 tour, a group of Melbourne women presented England captain Ivo Bligh with a small terracotta urn. It is reputed to contain a burnt item of cricket equipment, possibly a bail, ball or stump. These days, the winning team is presented with a Waterford crystal trophy, while the fragile urn stays in the MCC Museum at Lord’s cricket’s most famous venue.

For cricket fans, the library has numerous books, magazines, websites, DVDs and videos on the subject. To find a club there is a contact list of cricket clubs on the CINCH (Community Information Christchurch) website.
