Dame Marie Clay 1926 - 2007
Renowned educator Dame Marie Clay created and implemented a world-first reading programme in New Zealand in the 1970s. Reading Recovery is a system of one-to-one teaching to supplement classroom studies. The programme is used in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, the United States and Great Britain.
Current Education Minister Steve Maharey paid this tribute: “Dame Marie Clay has made a huge contribution to New Zealand education, and was one of the most distinguished researchers in educational literacy in the world”.
Born in Wellington in 1926, she died in Auckland on Friday 13 April 2007.
