The most romantic day of the year or just another commercialised event? Whatever your feelings are – Valentines Day is here. It is the perfect excuse to tell the significant other in your life how much they mean to you or pluck up the courage to ask out somebody.

Mystery surrounds the origins of Valentines Day, but February has long been associated with romance. To get into the spirit of things, Christchurch City Libraries has put together this guide to help you find out more about Valentines Day and maybe even get some days on how to celebrate it.

Here is a selection of books, plays, poems, and movies of a romantic inclination:

The American Film Institute (AFI) in 2002 listed Casablanca as the number one romantic movie of all time. The 1942 classic starred Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman.
