[1925]

In 1848 Ngai Tahu sold a section of the South Island which extended largely from the Nelson border to the Otago border. The land was bought by the New Zealand Company, who in turn sold it off to settlers in lots. The price for the land was £2,000, which was to be paid to Ngai Tahu in four instalments of £500 each six months.
