Dr Alfred Barker (1819-1873) photographed this view. In the foreground is the unformed Armagh Street and a few of the little wooden cottages built by the early settlers. The last house on the right, going towards the river, is near the corner of Armagh Street and Park Terrace, and was at some time occupied by Sir Henry Wigram (1857-1934). The second house from the right in the background is Thacker's Guardian Printery where the first sessions of the Provincial Government were held, 1852-1854. Riccarton Bush can be seen in the distance, with the Plough Inn (later Nancy's Hotel), the long building with three dormers, in front of it on the left
